Penny comes of age through quirky adventures and some serious trials.Ĭontent Advisory: A character is severely injured time is spent in a hospital.

I would have liked some more urgency, but it was still a moving tale that made me cry a little at the end. The book plodded along with no real direction but to describe Penny’s day-in-the life narrative. Penny is a fallible, street smart, yet innocent heroine who certainly acts the part of an eleven-almost-12-year old. Thoughts: I wanted to read about an Italian American family in the 50s because I thought it would mirror the experience of my own clan of Italians. Other adventures include attempts to keep her cousin Frankie out of trouble, scoring choice seats at Brooklyn Dodgers game, and plotting to keep her mother from dating the milkman.

Good use of occasional onscreen text to keep the story clear.Summary: Eleven-year-old Penny Falucci spends the summer of 1953 in New Jersey trying to uncover the secret of her late father and figure out why the two sides of her family don’t get along. The part where Penny’s arm “comes back to life” is well done too. When they are searching for treasure, it was a creative choice the way that the mechanical wringer machine that hurts Penny’s arm is here personified as a villain with a sword. I liked the use of the laugh track when Penny disobeys and goes to the pool, and the montage of stock images worked well to set a mood. I liked the ludicrous accents as they were telling the “Italian Navy” joke in the kitchen, and the quick cut to the seemingly non-sequitur about “brain food for dogs” available at the local butcher’s. The black and white filter highlighted the historical nature of the story well. Judges’ Remarks: I like the zigzagging, nonlinear way this movie hopscotches through the story (even going so far as to put the credits at the start of the movie … an unconventional choice!).
